History of Broadbeach Bowls Club

On May 20, 1951 a Public Meeting took place which saw the formation of the
Broadbeach Bowls Club.  The first General Meeting was held on September 9,
1951 at 10.30 am in the Surf Pavilion and opened by the Chairman elect J.Bigelow.
At this meeting it was resolved that the nomination fee for joining members be
$1.10 and that members joining before the first General Meeting be deemed as
Foundation members.  Mr Flatman was appointed the first Provisional Treasurer.

On October 7, 1951 a meeting was held at the home of Alderman Low at which
time plans were set into motion for the construction of the first green and the
foundation laid of the second green.

It was not until the meeting of September 7, 1952 that it confirmed a lease was
granted from the Lands Department.  The first two greens were built on the corner
of Surf Parade and Armrick Avenue, Broadbeach.  Both greens were under
construction by November 1952.

By 1953, the Club had 136 financial members.  The club was officially opened on
March 20, 1954.  The Club progressed with membership and finances as the 8th
Annual Report for 1959-60 shows.  The membership that year consisted of 167
Financial members, 20 Associate, 2 Life Members and 1 Honorary member.

The Ladies Bowls Club commenced in 1954.

In 1969 Broadbeach had a membership of 280 - one of the largest in the State.
The Club a most central one, was often favoured by the Association for staging
important bowls events.

From 1980 the second new Clubhouse was built together with four greens each
named as a tribute to a member's work.  With this new Clubhouse and four
excellent greens, Broadbeach Bowls Club had progressed to a large social and
sporting facility for its members.  Then, the man at the top was Harry Hood, well
known sportsman in the racing game.  Harry, like Stan Carter, played many games
for Queensland at interstate level.  He has won the Club's Single Championship
and a Master Pairs Title.  Excellent playing surfaces were prepared by some
dedicated Greenkeepers such as John Dalton and recently Les Gibbs and Chris
Lanham.

Membership in 1988 was 279 men, 235 ladies and was supported by 739 social
members.
